Family STEAM: Build a Spooky Village
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means the whole day is yours. Cloudy and 12°C — cool enough for costumes, dry enough to stay outside. Sunday is softer: 14°C with drizzle rolling in, so front-load the outdoor stuff Saturday and save the gallery and museum visits for Sunday. There is no shortage of options either day.
Burlington Public Library's New Appleby branch runs its Spooky Village build from 2:00–4:00 pm Saturday — kids design and decorate a cardboard haunted house, boo-tique, or witch's cottage to add to a growing community display. LEGO, Magna-Tiles, and Straws N Connectors are also out. Free, all ages, no registration required — just show up.
Springridge Farm runs Harvest Weekends through October, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday. The Giant Corn Trail is open, the bakery has pies and seasonal treats, and there are pumpkins to pick. Admission is $19 per person for ages 2–92 — budget accordingly for a family of four.
Mountsberg Conservation Area runs Skelebration from 4:30–10:00 pm Saturday — an illuminated Night Walk trail, haunted barn, raptor and snake appearances, campfires, and a new Eco Guardian scavenger hunt. No jump scares, but bring flashlights. Wagon rides through the woods are $6.50 per person, first come first served at the gift shop.
The Art Gallery of Burlington runs free drop-in Family Open Studios Sunday 1:00–4:00 pm. This season's programming is inspired by Wiigwasitig / waskway / Honouring the Birch Tree, exploring birch heritage through diverse art forms. A solid Sunday shelter option if the drizzle arrives on schedule.

The Loft at Longo's Walkers Line hosts a Halloween cooking class Saturday 3:00–5:00 pm. Kids make Zombie Slime Dip, Mummy Mozzarella Sticks, Witch's Fingers Cookies, and Monster Dirt Cups. Check registration requirements before you go — capacity in that kitchen is limited.
Ireland House Museum runs How to Be a Victorian Sunday 1:00–4:00 pm, and October's theme is Superstitions — ghosts, omens, and curious Victorian beliefs. Designed for ages 5–12, walk-ins welcome. Admission is free for family membership holders; pre-registration is recommended but not required.
BioTroopers Burlington opens its Sunday Science Open Lab 10:00–11:30 am — free drop-in, new hands-on challenge each week, specimens to investigate, things to build. Good first stop Sunday before the drizzle picks up.
Burlington Centre runs indoor trick-or-treating Saturday 11:00 am–2:00 pm, with participating stores handing out candy and over 10 Halloween photo backdrops set up across the mall. Free, costumes encouraged, giveaways for kids. Useful if you need a warm, dry start to Halloween morning.

Hamilton Public Library branches run Pumpkin Storytime on Saturday — the Central Library goes at 10:00 am, Valley Park and Kenilworth at 10:30 am, and West Harbour at 2:00 pm. Costumes are welcome. Thirty minutes of pumpkin stories and songs is a low-effort, high-return Halloween morning warmup for the under-six set.
